A Hat Tip to Sports Writing

How writing about sports lead me to self-discovery

Writing for me has always been a hobby. Something that I enjoyed but only expected to connect me to different people and challenge my thought process.

My “start” in writing was when I wrote about Detroit sports and hiking in a blog I created when I lived in Seattle. For me, it was a way to stay engaged with the teams I cared about across the country and explore a new hobby hiking the trails in the Pacific Northwest.

Through that experience, I became very interested in writing. Not only that, my comfort grew in seeing my words out on the internet for everyone to read. Granted there weren’t very many people that viewed my work.

However, the confidence I gained doing that has been crucial to my interest in growing my writing as a hobby. To have a subject I was so comfortable talking about making it easy to put it on paper for everyone (mainly my friends) to read and critique.

While writing about sports I found myself wanting more out of the writing experience. I still enjoyed talking about the successes, or more likely failures, of my sports teams, but I felt like there was more to get out of writing.

Sports writing can feel transactional. Oftentimes I don’t feel like I contribute much…
