Why I’ve Decided to Stay on Twitter

It’s become a complex decision for me

Twitter has long been my favorite social media site. I’ve always thought it was the perfect balance of informative news with a fun, social side.

When Elon Musk took over the company in the fall of 2022 I was cautiously optimistic he would be the shakeup Twitter needed to regain the social media market share lost to other platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok.

Instead, the app has gotten worse.

While Elon Musk has provided a shakeup, it hasn’t necessarily been the kind I was looking for as a previous advocate of the service.

Musk declares himself a “free speech absolutist” and is hesitant to censor hate speech and misinformation on the platform. Instead opting to provide users with their “First Amendment Right” regardless of how that makes other users on the platform feel or what they believe.

It seems like every day there are news stories that put Twitter in a negative light. Whether it is about hate speech found on the platform, turnover among the leadership group, or overall poor business practices that have harmed the reputation of the social media company.

As a user myself, it has made me question if the platform is something I want to stay on going forward.
